THE IMPORTANCE OF THORNBURY HOSPITAL

From Sheila Jones

"I wish to stress very strongly that the idea of closing Thornbury Hospital is wrong.

"A local community Hospital, which particularly gives help to the elderly and mentally sick is essential to the area around Bristol.

"1. There is a shortage of hospital beds for the elderly;
2. Recuperation from surgery or a long-term illness, in a hospital near home is more successful, and easier for the families;
3. Being able to attend outpatient clinics is easier for everyone, whatever their age;
4. Attending maternity and postnatal appointments at the hospital is far easier for young mothers with small children;
5. The people of Thornbury have raised large amounts of money to renew equipment and beds at the hospital and in the Day room. Are these pieces of equipment to be wasted, because it is the local people who helped to buy them who own them!

"It is very short sighted of the South Gloucestershire Primary Trust if they do not keep the hospital functioning. It would cost for more to send patients to other hospitals, and we know already how long one has to wait for any treatment on a hospital now, let alone in the future.

"Keep the small friendly hospital, familiar to the local people, giving employment to local people and help to those who need it at critical times."
